Emergency aid and reconstruction after the earthquake in 2015

The terrible earthquakes in Nepal in April and May of 2015 left some regions completely devastated. Up to 90% of buildings were damaged to such an extent that they were no longer inhabitable. Aftershocks and landslides also destroyed much of the water infrastructure.

Solaqua

In order to help the people affected quickly and effectively, Solaqua rapidly decided to work closely with Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) already active in the relatively inaccessible areas outside of Katmandu. As part of this emergency aid, purification of drinking water and the construction of temporary latrines were key in helping prevent disease. A second phase is now focussing on rebuilding the houses and schools which have been destroyed and restoring the supply of drinking water. In order to improve the water and hygiene conditions at 36 rebuilt schools we work togehter with Caritas Switzerland and their local team already in a second project phase.
